Elva works with fluid acrylics, she adds retarders and gells to keep the medium moving for as long as possible. The canvas is flipped, turned, tilted and often slammed to make the paint move a certain way. Slashes of solid paint occasionally interrupt the flow adding "almost random" affects of brush, reflections or shadows that appear and disappear in the texture of the scene.

        Elva Hook

Elva Hook grew up in Woodstock Ontario, Canada, and discovered painting when she was quite young. Elva had an excellent high school that taught her a wide range of skills with various media. "Training at Sheridan College led me to a professional practice as a freelance artist."

Since 1982 Elva has called the west end of Toronto home. She chose to set up her studio in Parkdale, only minutes away from Lake Ontario and High Park, complete with marshes and wetlands. These precious resources continue to teach and inspire.

        Impressionist Abstract Realism

Elva Hook have been painting full time since 2006. "Through years of experimenting with paint I have observed a deep connection to a liquid reality, an existence constantly in flux and mutable. Working with fluid acrylics, I add mediums to keep the paint moving for as long as possible. Gravity and agitation encourage the recipe to integrate while intrinsic patterns and waves emerge. Flow is continually interrupted to startle predictability and provoke entanglement
